It Ain’t Christmas Shoes

At many houses, I presume, there are holiday songs being sung and listened to all throughout the days. Christmas songs, Hanukkah songs, Kwanzaa (Oh my God, I could listen to this woman all day, she soothes me...) songs, you get the idea. I know my ears already started bleeding hearing the song, " Christmas Shoes". Actually, I almost took an axe to my radio hearing that just one time. I freakin' hate that song. It doesn't make me cry or feel bad. It just makes me want to hit stuff. Is that wrong? It is just so manipulative. I digress. In our house I don't hear "Jingle Bells" or "Away in a Manger", I hear this. Non-stop. TD, slumps to Jim Parsons perfection each time she belts out his portion of the song. I had no idea her normally high-pitched squeals could … [Read more...]

Nuttin’ But Love for Heavy D

RIP Heavy D.  You will be missed.  Mad love for this classic 90s style video, my personal fave Heavy D song.  How many big name models, movie stars and more can you find in this video?  It is like a tiny version of "Before They Were Stars".  P.S. Why did we love vests so damn much back then?  Crikey, it's like a vest convention in that video.  … [Read more...]

Life in Playlist Form

A few weeks ago I was doing my daily blog reading when I read Kristen's life playlist post. It got me thinking, "Hmm.. besides songs like this one, what would be in my life's playlist?" Is it songs that remind you of certain times or ones that encapsulate what you were going through at that age, growth spurt or nervous breakdown? I like to think my life's playlist is a little bit of both. It is songs that put me into a whirlwind of memories from a certain time (hot sun, blistering sand beneath my feet and the smell of salt and french fries equal summer to me.) or ones that I played over and over again to get through cerain times of my life. If I had to create it, it might look a little something like this- KC & the Sunshine Band- Shake Your Booty (number one the month I was born) The … [Read more...]

When I was Seventeen

It was a very good year...  *Cough* Choke on a bit of barf. I really hate that song. However, I was reading BUST magazine's advice for your 17 year-old self and thought, "Man! Seventeen. That was the shit, yo."  Yeah, I really talk like that in my head.  I know it doesn't jive with my blond bob and pearls.  I started thinking back to seventeen.  Cue time travel swirls and...When I was seventeen...I played Stray Cats, Sexy & 17 almost non-stop.I drove around in my Volvo 240 DL, stopping at the local Stop & Shop to pick up sheet cakes, while listening to music like Regulate, Tempted, Green Day, and old Duran, Duran tunes.  Screw Nirvana, that wasn't my style.  Why were we picking up sheet cakes?  To eat of course and throw at each … [Read more...]

Behold! Embarrassing Ipod Songs Come to Life!

The other day I asked the goons over on Facebook what their most embarrassing songs were on their iPods. This is what I got.  NKOTB- The Right StuffThe entire Sasha Fierce album from an unlikely source.Christopher Cross' "Sailing"  (Yeah, that's pretty bad.  But I have the theme song from the movie 'Arthur' by him so I'm in the same boat. Pun totally intended.) Dawn, this one's for you. Get zen.  Both songs make me feel like I'm five and riding in my parents Datsun 200SX while I chew on the upholstery piping.  Lisa, Lisa and the Cult JamAll Night Long by Lionel RichieSexy Back by Justin Timberlake (Oh, I'm sorry?  That's embarrassing? Embarrassing is having 'Dick in a Box' on your iPod. Everyone has Sexy Back.)Jesse Mccartney, Beautiful Soul.  (I don't … [Read more...]

Overheards- Queen Edition

Scene:  TD and I are heading home from a long, fun day at the pumpkin patch.  My iPod is blaring Queen in the car.TD:  "WHAT?!  Another one bites the what?!"V:  "The dust. Another one bites the dust."TD:  "Blech! I don't want to bite dust.  That's gross!  Is there a song that is the opposite of that?  Is there a "Another One Doesn't Bite Dust" song?"  V:  "No, there isn't one of those songs." I try not to laugh.TD:  "Oh. (thoughtful pause) Because I would like that song."  … [Read more...]

Damn Girl, That’s Like Grandma Old!

It occurred to me the other day as I was jammin' out to some funk music (p-funk, g-funk, disco-inspired, 80s stripped, whatever I can't get enough) in my grocery getter that I am subjecting my kids to music that is akin to what my grandparents made me listen to as a child.  Back then, in the 80s with all its big hair and synthesizers spinning like a record right around the Top 40 dial, they would sit back in the cushy boat-sized beige car and play Big Band sounds. Ah, the 1940s.  My love of funk (OK, funk is even older by origin so geez) and its 70s sister music disco and even very early rap are now um, entering into their fortieth decade of existence.  This my friends, is frightening.  Even my iPod is engraved with the phrase, "Don't fake the funk." I am … [Read more...]

Musical Flashbacks and Burgers

H and I took the kids to a local burger place the other night because a.) he suggested it and b.) there is nothing better to my always nauseous stomach than a cheeseburger (handmade), fries (handcut) and a coke.  Seriously. It's like manna from heaven right now and keeps me content for hours.  I digress.  While there I noticed the smattering of people throughout the restuarant were all various ages and backgrounds.  There was the military Dad with his two middle school age girls, the teenage boy stopping by with his mother, another teenage boy silently chomping away with his parents, just as silent seated next to him and a few random college age kids.  Throw in a few guys alone and in their middling 30s and 40s and you had quite a collection of … [Read more...]

It’s Her Birthday

Lying across a green and orange paisley and floral couch, I would twist and turn always trying to find a cool spot to rest my face against the fabric. The music was always there. Playing softly, sometimes loudly, always there carrying me along as if I was floating down a river. The soft pumping of the foot pedals accompanied it all in the distant background.Sometimes I would rouse myself from my own little world of imaginary friends and lost lands to request a tune, most often it was, "Play the mosquito song! Play the mosquito song!" She would laugh and wordlessly pull out the children's music book and play the juvenile tune that buzzed across the keyboard. After it was over it was usually her favorite Chopin that she would play.  Sometimes if I was lucky, I could pick out my favorite … [Read more...]
