Got Colic?

I can still remember the tension. The aching knot in my shoulders that was caused by them continuously being hunched up in stress and frustration as I tried to soothe my daughter for what felt like the millionth hour that day. Every day.  Colic.  That five letter word can reduce any parent to a puddle and incite groans in so many.  I still cry out in horror when someone mentions it and our daughter is now almost five.Shortly after we brought our beautiful first baby home from the hospital she changed.  Gone was the serene sweet face.  Instead it was replaced by a red, beady-eyed screaming mite of a child that never stopped crying.  She would be rigid and fighting for hours on end.  It caused no end of stress, questioning and frustration in our house … [Read more...]

You Are About to Enter the Sick Zone.

Welcome to the my lair! (Insert evil laugh here.)It's filled with tissues that have been used multiple times over. They litter the floor around me and threaten to take over my tiny world.I shuffle around with a cocktail of Dayquil, Mucinex and ibuprofen. This cold is kicking my ass. I've cried "uncle" many times over and it still keeps enforcing Dragon Whips on me. Last night at 1:18 a.m. and desperate from a rousing fight with my lungs and a coughing fit that threatened to wake my entire house I chugged the kids Chestal cough suppressant in triple dose. Homeopathic honey-ed goodness. I think it worked. It was either that or the Last Call with Carson Daly and surfing Prizey that did the trick. The juice is gone. There are still no cough drops in the house and my nose looks like someone … [Read more...]

A Pearl of Wisdom

Cervical cancer is my ghost. When I was 21 my doctor told me she was "pretty sure" I had it. After much hysteria and testing, it turns out that she was wrong. I'm not even going to go into how insane it was that she diagnosed me like that without hard facts and reams of positive test results. I can't even describe the big sigh of relief I had for weeks on end when the results were negative. However, I've had to spend the last 12 years being extra-vigilant, enduring more tests and in general wondering if this will be my end result. While at Blogher this summer I happened to meet the group behind 'Pearl of Wisdom'. I was lucky enough to meet Michelle Whitlock and learn about her incredible survivor story. I believe, like Michelle, that the more we educate and spread awareness about this … [Read more...]

Disney on Ice and Me

I'm just going to be up front about this. Yes, I was a Disney fan as a kid. Sunday night family movies from Disney made me excited beyond belief. I could not contain my face-cracking smiles and hysteria over meeting the big mouse himself on our family trip to Disney World when I was five.I even had a Mickey Mouse watch in high school. It was leather with a gold on gold face. Subtle, you know? I once ate at Burger King every week for a month just to score all the Jack Skellington 'Nightmare Before Christmas' watches. When I got into my angsty young adulthood Disney, it's corporations and princesses smacked of everything I was against. "No rescue!" I would yell at the princesses that glossed the movie and television screens only to have them stare back at me blankly as they multiplied like … [Read more...]

I’m Getting All Schmaltzy About My Friends

Along with all the other things you are thinking about this month- heading back to school, stocking up on the latest fall fashions, closing down that summer house (heh), you can now add in that September is NATIONAL FEMALE FRIENDSHIP MONTH.According to a 2009 University of Michigan study women with close female friends have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. I fully agree with this statement because I know it isn't just the wine on girls night that makes me relaxed. It is the sharing of our week's stories, the cackling laughter, encouragement and support that we give each other weekly that keeps me going and it is better than any magic pill in a bottle.I feel truly blessed to have as many friends in my life as I do. It is a lot of work to keep some of those contacts going through … [Read more...]

Proud of My Mans

"So how do you feel knowing that your husband is about to go into the ring and get punched in the face?" Um.. I'm hoping that I don't have a toothless spouse at the end of the night? I'm really not into that whole "I go no teefesus" look."What was it like seeing him up in the ring fighting?" Scary. Fun. Weird to know that now people know how much chest hair that man has. Heh."Are you excited? Do you feel like you are going to throw up or do you just want to see him wail on some dude?" Wail on the dude, not pour blood out of his face or make me have to yell things like, "I smell bacon! F the police H! Bring home the bacon, baby!" Obviously, H was fighting a cop.I think I got asked these questions about ninety-bazillion times the night of H's fight. It is as if people were surprised that I … [Read more...]
