How to Pack for Alaska

This time next week I will already be back from my whirlwind trip to Alaska.  I'm visiting my oldest and dearest friend, E.  She moved to Alaska a little over a year ago and I just knew I had to visit.  It's been way too long since we've been together and I've been in a ridiculous packing planning frenzy for this trip. I keep asking myself the same question over and over again. How to Pack for Alaska? It is all about the layers.  The weather in June is often rainy and temps can dip into the 50s during the days or reach the low 70s and be sunny.  It varies from day to day. Layers are key to packing and taking in the sights. Also, when I land at what is typically my bedtime I will not just be five hours behind my normal time zone but also it will still be light outside.  The sun will … [Read more...]

How to Pack for Disney

Disney 2012. Source: Victoria Mason Traveling to Disney involves a lot of details. From booking a hotel near Disney to packing your things, there are a lot to think about. I still remember the agony of planning our first trip. Then I clued into the fact that using a travel advisor was one of the best ideas I have ever had and free! Being sent a copy of The Complete Walt Disney World 2017 was just icing on the cake.  How to pack for Disney is a whole other deal. Especially for me, Little Ms. I Want to Be Comfortable and Look Good Too. I decided to tackle the task by using my closet and Maven to figure out my best looks and stay organized. I still follow the color palette rule and other 'how-to pack' plans as well. What's Maven? With Maven, I don't just create a board and am … [Read more...]

How to Pack for a Weekend Getaway

Montebello (credit: Victoria Mason) Last weekend H and I took a little trip for our 15th wedding anniversary. We headed to Monticello for a night. I knew that as soon as I dropped my bags at the front door I was off to see Heart, Joan Jett and Cheap Trick for a night out with some of my girls. It all came down to 'How to Pack for a Weekend Getaway'.   How to Pack for a weekend Getaway by victoriamason featuring gold earrings Traveling in the car, walking the grounds of Jefferson's Virginia home and then hitting the streets of Charlottesville, I wanted to be comfortable, but also look nice because we were having our anniversary dinner out at C & O Restaurant. What to Pack for a Four Day Trip

I have a four-day trip planned later this week I will be flying for two days and working for two days.  I created this 'What to Pack for a Four Day Trip' piece to help me pick out what to wear as well as help you too. I plan to keep everything condensed to a carry on bag.  I will have my work bag and a cross-body purse as well.  That's it.  Two pairs of shoes and I'm done. And yes, this does include activewear to actually be active in. First, I love this Calpak bag. It's been one of the best items I have ever bought from Shopbop. It becomes the bag everyone wants to use when they have a quick trip too.  Do you want compliments from flight attendants? Then you need to get this bag! I'll be using these bags as well. I like to keep things contained and well-organized. I will … [Read more...]

Spring Trends, Packing & Mom 2.0 Summit

Months ago I mentioned that things were brewing for me and I was excited about what 2014 would bring. I'm pleased to announce that for the past month I've been blogging for my favorite blogging conference, the Mom 2.0 Summit. By far one of the best conferences I have ever attended in my blogging career, Mom 2.0 is in Atlanta this year and with it comes a fabulous Garden Party at the Estate and sponsored by Dove. While not a fashion blogging conference like LuckyFABB, Mom 2.0 attendees bring it when it comes to dressing each day. I'm so honored, pleased and just plain old excited to be writing for this fantastic event that begins this Thursday!! Here's a little bit of what I've been doing! … [Read more...]

Whatcha Wearing Wednesday-Pinterest for Packing

Reposted from my column at The DC Moms.   Pinterest is the time suck, er, lovely place where you can spend time pinning your heart out with beautiful things to cook, bake, and decorate -- all in your head. In my experience, most of it never moves beyond the board. The gorgeous buffet you want to repurpose and paint in a stunning metallic grey stays on the board and not in your dining room. And when reality meets Pinterest dreamland the adorable cupcakes for the tiny tot's birthday bash never make an appearance when Wegman's has options too. However many funny, inspirational quotes, healthy meals or educational activities I pin next to this fall's hottest boot style, most of my pins just never see fruition. I may however, found a way to make Pinterest useful. Really, and … [Read more...]

Pack it Up! We’re Going to Chocolate World!

"Are we going to Pretzel land today?" TD asks continuously. To her Pennsylvania is the land of the giant pretzel thanks to her US Maps placemat. However, after this weekend I am quite sure PA will be known as Chocolate World from here on out.I'm doing laundry like a whirling dervish today. I just finished unpacking myself from my trip and off we go again. I'm looking forward to this opportunity for some downtime with the family. Lately our schedules have been so missed matched that we are almost never home at the same time. The kids are coming and going and so are we. I'm not concerned about the car ride to Hershey. We've got car trips down. Rather I'm deeply, deeply concerned about us all sharing a hotel room. We've got light sleepers, we've got nappers and we all have different … [Read more...]

Crap! I forgot to pack my fat pants!

I'm headed to BlogHer tomorrow. It's my first time. Be gentle with me. I realized this morning amidst my cramming in other blogging stuff and figuring out what to pack that the last time I was in lovely and chilly San Fran I had to buy fat pants to board the plane. That's right. You heard me. FAT PANTS. I think it deserves the all caps.Never before had I gained weight like that so fast. Two weeks in S.F. eating at Mel's, on Bay Street, The Garlic Rose and more and all I came back with was a taste for fine food and an expanded waist line. I remember trying to squeeze into my jeans and having to head to the nearest Gap in horror as I bought a pair of men's drawstring cargo pants. I still own them too dammit and that was back in the year 2000. I use them as snow pants now so I can layer … [Read more...]

Old Man Winter- Your bags are packed and ready to go

It is precisely during this week each winter that I decide, Enough is enough! I'm through with you Old Man Winter! Scram! You gots to git! Last year I was a bit preoccupied being in the throes of labor and all and was able to delay the winter doldrums by a week. I remember being home, oh about one day, and looking out the window in T.D.'s brand new room and seeing the snow, the cold gray sky and starkly black branches against the wintry landscape and feeling despair. Seasonal Affective Disorder loomed large on my horizon. The winter blues had officially set in. In 30 degree weather I started walking. This year I come back from my sun-filled trip to snow, then slush, then ice. Then more snow. Then some more ice. Ha Ha Old Man Winter. Ha Ha. Real cute. I'm sick of cold feet and … [Read more...]
