Join Me for a Day of Beauty

Spending Saturday morning going through a long, involved, relaxing and necessary 'day of beauty' happens in haste or not at all now that the kids have their own lives budding and blossoming before our eyes.  Throw on a mask here, exfoliate over there, slap on some polish and don't forget to shave!  It's not my dream. It's just the reality. This Saturday will be a bit different. … [Read more...]

Running Scared

What do DC Runners do to celebrate the month of October and the fabulous fall season? We take part in the ghoulishly fun twilight run at the Congressional Cemetery, naturally. I'm long overdue for a fitness post and the Dead Man's Run is the perfect way to throw one in. It's a race I have wanted to do since it began four years ago for a lot of reasons. … [Read more...]

Oooh It’s Planet Spooky at Kings Dominion

Disclosure:  TMC was not paid for this post. Products and tickets received are for review purposes only.  Opinions are TMC's only. The only roller coaster I will ride. I will fully admit that I'm not an amusement park person.  Actually, it is more that I'm not a ride person.  My kids and husband on the other hand possess a gene for thrill rides, coasters and all things theme park that I just can't handle.  However, I do love spending the day in the park, eating all the food I can cram into my mouth (Kings Dominion has gluten free options too) and riding the kiddie rides that make-up Planet Snoopy.  Yes, really. That's how lame I am when it comes to these things.  My kids are little and for now a day spent at Kings Dominion in Doswell, VA doesn't go much beyond Snoopy's world and … [Read more...]

What I Wore Wednesday

Dude.  I .  Well... I'm at a loss. I thought after being away for about a week I would feel all invigorated and want to just jump back into life and work. Meh.  Not so much. Life, yes.  I mean save the laundry and grocery shopping with three handsy kids who move like molasses in January but horray for bubbles! Baking! Pool time and reading books on the couch together when the afternoon sun heats up our little 'hood to scorching. … [Read more...]

Kid’s Parties- Is It Just Keeping Up With the Joneses?

Cross-posted and archived from DC Metro Moms.  Original post from February 27, 2008.  My daughter turned two this weekend. Yes, I know, it is hard to believe. I can barely wrap my brain around it either. However, you know what the hardest part of her turning two was for me? It was- To have a party or not to have a party? It was the ultimate question on my mind. What would people think if we opted out of this birthday milestone? Would we be labeled as bad, unloving parents?I drove myself mad with this conundrum. I wanted so badly for her birthday to go right I kind of freaked out. There were blog posts about it. I consulted friends and family. Everyone had an opinion and an idea of what I should be doing or forgetting all together. When it came right down to it I felt like my … [Read more...]

Saturday Afternoon Fever

Cross-posted and archived DC Metro Moms post.  Original date February 17, 2008. Re-reading this makes me think, "BLD! I want to go to there! Again!"I have a confession to make. I hate kids stuff. Go ahead and tsk tsk me if you want to, that's fine, I'm used to it. If you admit to not loving spending hours putting together the same puzzle or picking up leaves in the freezing cold then I applaud you. I find nothing fun about going to fairs, going on rides, or petting zoos either. Spending the afternoon, day, or a vacation with a cartoon character is not my cup of tea. I can play puzzles, coloring and tea party just so long with my daughter before I have had my fill and I want to go read Newsweek aloud to her instead. And truthfully? I feel just awful about it. I feel like less of a … [Read more...]

Have You Seen My Rose-Colored Glasses?

Yesterday, I wrote a rather bleak post. I was going to delete it and move on. Then I thought, what if someone else out there needs to hear this? What if someone else out there is having that kind of day? I know that in my darker moments just finding someone who is going through the same thing has bolstered me immensely. So here it is, I titled it 'In the Tunnel' and while today is warmer and brighter and I am lucky to have two such incredibly smiley children I don't believe that days like this one are gone completely. It would be nice to think that poof! you take a pill and instantly your world is better. That's what the drug companies want us to think isn't it? That after a few weeks you begin to see life through rose-colored glasses once again and suddenly that depleted glass is … [Read more...]

Currently at J&J Camp Baby

Hour OneThe blogosphere is alive and well. Watching people blog, email and twitter away. Why did I leave my laptop in my room? Baby brain has begun already.Sucking on sorry little butter mints found at the bottom of my purse to prevent the inevitable nausea that never fails at this hour. Thinking about the cinnamon and brown sugar pop tarts hangin' in my purse.Ooh look! I'm sitting between Moms Favorite Stuff and Mums The Wurd!New Food Fact: Nutmeg is a hallucinogen. Anyone have any nutmeg recipes? Eating No More Tears bubbles is A-OK. So is bathwater. Guzzling No More Tears? It's just a good laxative. Whew!Hour TwoDespite cutting boards being dirtier than a toilet seat it is still not OK to make a sandwich on the potty.Just scarfed down the pop tarts. Was tasty despite hearing … [Read more...]
