Why We Are Considering Adopting a Pet.

Things to consider when adopting a pet.
The never ending love from a pet.

Recently, friends of ours adopted a new dog. This seems to happen on an almost continuous basis according to my social media feed. Family members just brought home an adopted yellow lab only last week. We already own a dog. He is two and he is finally settling down a bit. Is it time to consider adopting a pet to give him a little friend and company? If you ask him he is totally on board with that idea. This idea of adopting a pet is what comes into our minds each time we see another friend or family member add a rescue to their own life.

Before this cutie came into our life we looked everywhere for our next pet. Rescues, breeders, shelters, you name it we looked at it probably five times. Our search went from our home state of Virginia to as far up as New York and down to Tennessee. We knew we needed to add another member to our family after our last rescue Doberman, Diesel had passed away quickly from congestive heart failure.

The hole left in our hearts was deep and we felt that the magic and excitement, and energy from a puppy was just what the doctor ordered to heal our broken hearts. After a few weeks of searching, we found Brody and life has never been the same. While he is radically different in personality from Diesel we love him just as much.

Is It Time to Adopt a Pet?

I think the answer to this is simple. If you have the space, the monetary means and each member of the family keeps bringing up the idea of adding a pet or another pet to your household then you might want to bring up the discussion in full. The answer will probably be ‘yes’ and the search can really begin.

Second, once you have made the decision as a family to move forward then consider if the timing is good. Most families like to welcome a new pet to their home during a break. Summer is a great time because you can be outdoors but try to do it after any summer travel plans are done. You don’t want to bring home a new dog or cat only to leave them a few days later.

Third, will you be adopting a pet like the one you own already or new animal or breed? Will adopting a pet like this be compatible to your lifestyle or with your current pet or pets?

All of these things we are in the middle of discussing right now. I don’t see us making a decision any time soon either. Truthfully, while the desire is there for me I am not 100% I can handle another being in my home-furry or not. I love dogs like a dog person does but maybe I’m just a one dog at a time girl.

I love Chief Brody (and the name). Glad that you chose to adopt! That is definitely the route I will take one day now that it is so easy.
