Most people feel completely safe while driving their cars. Whether they are going across town or across the country, they are in their own world while in their automobile. The sad truth is, driving a car can make you a target for some crimes.

We will give you some expert tips that will help you remain safe while driving.

  • Problem – Automatic Door Locks

Most cars come with automatic door locks. Drivers feel they are safe because their car locks the doors for them. Check your manual to see if you have options to set the door locks. Some people set their door locks to open when the car is shifted in “Park.” So, while you are sitting in your car, getting your cell phone, and your handbag, you are in an unlocked car and you are distracted. People who prey on drivers only need a couple of minutes to act.

TIP # 1 – Solution

  • Set your auto-locks to open when you remove the keys and have everything ready to go when you place the car in “Park.”
  • Pay attention to anyone who seems to be hanging around for no reason
  • If you feel uncomfortable, drive away or seek help

  • Staged accident

A staged accident is when you are sitting at a red light or stop sign and a car behind you bumps into you. It is a minor bump that does little more than startle you. The occupants in the car that bumped you, begin to exit their car as if to check for damages. Notice, you will not see the driver getting out of the car. You open your door to see if there really is damage, and you are pushed away and the people get in your car and take off. There are times when they want more than the car and you are shoved over and they take you and the car.

TIP # 2 – SOLUTION

  • If you see several people step out and approach your car, do not unlock the door. Drive to a busy gas station and call for help. One clue is. The driver of the car will stay in his seat, ensuring a fast exit. You will rarely be trapped in traffic. The scheme only works if there is room for them to take off in your car.

  • TIP # 4 – Getting your baby from the car seat

  • Tip # 5 – Be Responsible

Driving is a privilege, not a right. Driving while distracted, drinking, under the influence, eating, or talking on the phone means your attention is taken away from driving. Make it a priority to drive carefully and only drive when you can give it 100% of your attention.

  • TIP # 6 – Keep your car in good working order

Never drive a car that is low on fuel, needs oil, needs water, and a has tires that are under-inflated. Service your car often and make repairs when they are needed. Breaking down makes you vulnerable.
