Zootopia

I don’t typically review movies or do a lot of kid-oriented things in this space anymore, but I could not resist Zootopia.  My girls repeatedly asked about this flick since they first viewed a trailer back in the fall and I had to admit it looked pretty funny.

All About It

Zootopia,   a modern mammal metropolis. The colors, the way the animators created a city that comprises the habitats of all the various creatures on the planet and used their features to incorporate them into the buildings and surroundings drew me in as well as the kids.   Neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown show how Zootopia is a melting pot of an environment where all are welcome and thrive.  A great message anytime, but it’s particularly timely during this election year.  Just me?  I dare you not to compare and contrast it especially in the main character, Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) closing speech.

The story goes that Officer Judy Hopps is the first bunny on a police force.  No one thinks she can be more than a meter maid.  Enter the wily fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), as a con man who begrudgingly assists Hopps to solve a mystery about missing Zootopia residents. Bateman is perfectly cast as Nick and to me, makes the movie. Call it a comedy-adventure flick, it is loaded with engaging characters, sweet and funny moments and lots of fun. As soon as it was over my girls asked if they could see it again.  Then they asked again every day for the next week!

With its bright colors, engrossing story and long list of characters voiced by a variety of celebrities, Zootopia is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages and adults alike.  The story certainly plays in a more grown-up fashion that keeps you interested.  I think Zootopia will be big and is a great way to kill the winter doldrums or embrace the new spring season.  Take the kids over spring break! You won’t regret it.
